| 1 day ago (edited) | Panpsychism is more approachable when we have a concept for what constitutes higher and lower forms. I tend to think that recognisable goal directed behaviour as a whole is a useful place to start. If the ability to perform a behaviour is lost when the thing is decomposed, then the thing is a candidate for posessing subjectivity. A rock can be split and then fused back together and there is no behaviour that is lost. The same can not be said of a cell, or a fish, or a mitochondrion. It is true that the simplest things are performing such inconcievably formulaic and repetitive behaviours that their experience is completly unimaginable. However, the total of their experience is another axis to consider. The single point of a pen following the path set out by a spirograph results in a complex image. | |
