There are common issues that can cause a UV lamp to stop curing within a UV system, decreasing the intensity of the UV light and rendering the UV system ineffective. Mirror Coating is one of those issues, an effect of over-cooling and results in a combination of tungsten from the electrode and mercury condensing onto the inside of the lamp ends, giving it a mirror-coated effect. You can take specific prevention measures including: • Order your lamps from Alpha-Cure! Our UV lamp ends are coated with heat-reflective materials such as; gold, platinum, silver & white paint to keep the lamp shoulders hot. Contrary to popular belief, white paint is the best reflective coating to retain heat within the lamp • The system is producing too much cool air that isn’t being properly circulated evenly along the length of the lamp. Remember to keep the lamp shoulder temperature above 600 °C, (1,112°F) • If the UV lamp is not running at the correct power for prolonged periods, UV lamp operators should seek professional advice in this instance. What 5 things should you be doing to prolong the life of your UV lamp? 1. Always wear latex gloves when unpacking and then handling a UV lamp, as any residue and oil from your fingertips will contaminate the surface of the lamp and cause issues once it is ignited. 2. Before placing the lamp into the UV system, ensure you clean the lamp body with isopropanol-based wipes. 3. For longer lamps, rotate them every 100-200 hours to avoid deformation of the quartz and ‘bowing’. 4. Avoid excessive starts – this can cause contamination due to the electrodes throwing off tungsten into the lamp. When you remove the UV lamp from the system, check that the electrical connections are tight and not eroded. 5. Ensure the UV system is clear of all external contamination, such as inks and paper dust, and clean the lamps regularly with isopropyl wipes. Allow the lamp to cool for at least 5 minutes after the power has been turned off before you handle the lamp. #lamplife #uvhintsandtips

So, how does it work? The System Requirements Let’s start at the beginning. An original equipment manufacturer, (OEM) with a new UV curing system may need a UV lamp with specifications that are not available off the shelf. If that’s the case then our UV experts start by learning all about how the new UV system works and what its requirements are. This will involve discussions with the system engineers, product consultants and our experts to find out what the lamp dimensions need to be along with electrical characteristics and spectral output. UV Lamp Design Once all the technical specifications are confirmed and approved by the OEM, our team gets to work designing the lamp using the latest CAD software to finalise the dimensions, end cap size and shape, and wire placement. We also work on the correct chemical composition that needs to be inside the lamp according to the requirements. UV Lamp Testing Next is the testing phase. Our engineers will build sample lamps to test in-house to make sure the electrical characteristics and spectral output match the specifications determined in the brief. All the results are recorded so we can dial in any necessary adjustments to achieve the targeted output. The next round involves testing the new lamps with the UV system and running the process to make sure the lamp consistently performs as required. Production After testing is complete and the OEM deems the lamp fit for purpose, full-scale manufacturing can begin. Troubleshooting - why should you clean your UV lamp? Lack of UV lamp maintenance and cleaning could lead to reduced lifespans for your UV curing lamps. Devitrification is a process where the fused quartz of the lamp body begins to change its structure to a crystalline form. Devitrification can happen when a UV lamp is catalysed by chemical impurities on the lamp body, such as oils secreted by the skin. Problems with your UV lamp developing mirror coating? If your UV lamps are developing a mirror coating on the inside of the quartz, then you may need to check if your system is producing too much cool air. Good cool air circulation should help to keep your lamp temperature above 600°C, (1,112°F).
